Kennedy on Gov. Whitmer’s budget recommendation

Tuesday, March 5, 2019

LANSING — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer presented her budget recommendations today for the 2019-20 fiscal year to a joint meeting of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. Among her recommendations were significant allotments to clean up and protect our water and increasing school funding by $507 million—the largest increase in a generation. In response to her recommendations, state Rep. Sheryl Kennedy (D-Davison) issued the following statement:

“One of our state’s greatest failures of the last eight years was not recognizing the importance of education in preparing our students today for the economy of tomorrow. Years of misguided policies and priorities have left Michigan’s children at a significant disadvantage to their peers in other states. By proposing the single largest commitment to supporting our students in nearly two decades, Gov. Whitmer has made it clear that those days are finally behind us and that Michigan will once again serve as an example to the rest of the nation in preparing children for success.”
